Summary : In discussing the methodological limits faced by empirical research on poverty among nomadic pastoralists and in reviewing recent evidence from research in related domains, the authors develop a methodological framework for investigating poverty among nomadic pastoralists. Starting with a discussion of selected key-concepts in connection with pastoralism, vulnerability and ecological non-equilibrium, a methodological framework is proposed. It is based on the principle of triangulation allowing for an increased sensitivity to the perspective adopted by researchers. This framework should facilitate a better understanding of the complex and diverse phenomena linked to poverty and particularly its social meanings among nomadic pastoralists. The authors conclude that triangulation offers a broad range of methodological tools, each having a limited range of efficacy and validity, depending on the epistemological position adopted by the researcher. |
