Summary : This study contributes to improving knowledge about the biogeography of the Desert Locust in Algeria. It comprises a chorologic study of the Desert Locust phenomenon in Algeria and the study of locust behaviour during recession periods along with critical analysis of the practical consequences of improving monitoring and surveying, as well as preventive control and early control in case of an upsurge. For this study, we used different types of data: personal data from field work in Southern Algeria and data resulting from the National Plant Protection Institute collected by field staff from 1983 to 2000. The high frequency zones of locust occurrence for the two phenologic states (nymphs and adults) were delimited. The establishment of monthly locust occurrence maps led to a better knowledge of the space-time dynamics of the Desert Locust populations in Algeria during recession periods. The reproduction area of solitary Desert Locust spread from central to meridional Sahara. Only these two areas are concerned by regular reproduction of the moving locust. Some sites enable regular reproduction liable to generate phasal transformation phenomena certain years. Such phenomenon is important when allochton populations are already more or less transiens.

Keywords : Algeria, desert Locust, space-time distribution
