Variation of flora richness according to the grazing gradient around watering points in pre-Saharan Tunisia

Summary : Neighbourhoods of wells can provide the best context for studying the effects of animal pressure on floristic cortege. We used seasonal monitoring of flora richness for three years in our study. Jaccard’s index was calculated in the more humid seasons (spring 2004 and 2006). This study was carried out along transects radiating around three wells located in the communal rangelands of El Ouara, pre-Saharan Tunisia. The main results show: i) seasonal drought affects floristic richness more than animal activity\; ii) the annual/perennial ratio is more strongly influenced by seasonal drought\; and iii) Jaccard’s index shows that the disturbance of the arid Tunisian steppes can enhance their floristic homogenization.

Keywords : animal pressure, arid zone, floristic composition, grazing, rangelands, Tunisian steppe, watering point
