Artemisia herba-alba Asso population dynamics in the southern steppe area of Oran (Western Algeria)

Science et changements planétaires / Sécheresse. Volume 18, Number 3, 193-8, septembre 2007, Article scientifique

Summary : In the steppe area south of Oran (Western Algeria), sagebrush (Artemisia herba-alba Asso) is progressively replacing alfa (Stipa tenacissima L.) due to the sedentarization of pastoralists, persistant drought and a natural long term drop in the rhythm of exploitation. This study of the spatial distribution of sagebrush is based on systematic sampling of five transects. The treatment of data gathered in the field by statistical tests of heterogeneity made it possible to analyze sagebrush population dynamics and evoke the reasons behind the complexity of sagebrush horizontal structures.

Keywords : Algeria, Algerian steppe, alfa grass, sagebrush, space-time distribution
