Summary : Fire has significantly influenced the dynamics of ecosystems throughout the Mediterranean basin. For a long time, fire has been considered as an agent of plant and soil degradation. According to recent research, fire only has a moderate effect on soils, flora and fauna. Soil modifications varies according to the fire regime. The flora and vegetation structure are only altered for a short period. Animals react in different ways, but always in accordance with the manner of plant recovery. Burned ecosystems appear to return to a similar state as the one preceding the fire. Fire frequency and recovery time are important criteria for evaluating the long-term effects of fire on ecosystems.
