Summary : Greenhouse gases caused by man are mainly derived from energy consumption and ecosystem manipulation (forests, savannahs and farm land). To reduce these gases, the IPCC recommends research concentrate on energy-saving and renewable resources. The first objective should be to try and promote any operation which, while still promoting development, allows for an overall reduction in emissions. This effectively means paying more attention to « eco-bioenergetic » programmes, practices and technology geared towards solutions more ecological and economical than today’s. This, however, is not enough to bring about the massive reduction in greenhouse gases needed by the beginning of the next century. Immediate steps must therefore be taken to open the doors to a 21st-century technology which genuinely enables best use of the biomass to be mode on a massive and competitive scale while still increasing the productivity of farm lands and satisfy the necessarily ever-increasing need for food, renewable resources and energy. |
