Summary : With a climate subject to influences of the El Niño Southern Oscillation phenomenon, the north-eastern part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul experienced exceptional rainfall on 26 and 27 May 1992. The total volume falling in this period had a return period of several centuries\; the intensities of rainfall had return periods that were much shorter. The paper gives results from an analysis of the corresponding peak discharges measured on small watersheds, and assesses the impact of the event on both urban and rural environments. With a climate subject to influences of the El Niño Southern Oscillation phenomenon, the north-eastern part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul experienced exceptional rainfall on 26 and 27 May 1992.
