Summary : Post-dams in the Senegal river delta: scenarios and impacts of refilling the Ndiael basin.
The Ndiael, located on the south-eastern border of the Senegal river delta, is a basin of some 150 km2. In the past, it was inundated by the river flood but, from the late fifties, the lake basin dried up due to the building of embankments and drought. Today, with the construction of the Diama and Manantali dams, the Ndiael basin can be filled once more. However, due to diverging interests on the local, national and international levels, this is not without difficulties.
After a brief introduction to the Ndiael basin, the paper examines two scenarios of hydraulic management based on a specific software package :
- periodic filling for a rehabilitated reserve\;
- a permanent lake for a range of purposes.
The advantages and disadvantages of the scenarios will be assessed precisely through predictive modelling of ecological, health (risk of bilharzia) and socio-economic impacts. Following this, an integrated management frame-work will be put forward as a compromise solution.
