Summary : On certain ground surfaces made of substances which swell under the effect of water, the alternation of humidification and desiccation can create specific microreliefs. Tropical clayey depressions undergoing successive periods of drought and flooding are particularly susceptible to development of this type or microrelief, called gilgai.
