Summary : The region of Mondoro (in Mali) is currently undergoing important reorganization of its land use as relationships change between Peul cattle-growers (herders) and Dogon crop-farmers. Drought and outside intervention have modified their economic relations. The purchase of cattle by the farmers has changed the traditional terms of exchange between the two groups and been deeply unfavorable to the herders. The Dogon now refuse access to their lands for the Peul herds. The Peul must therefore grow food to survive and have had to modify their traditional transhumance routes. The loss of space available for grazing disrupts the herders’ organization. Recent decentralization has also favored the farmers’ control of land. Today, in Mondoro, Dogon agricultural expansion is jeopardizing the future of herding and simultaneously increasing the unsustainable overuse of resources. |
