Summary : Although Ivory Coast is a very humid country (it is located in the humid tropical zone), the drought affecting many West African countries is also felt in Ivory Coast. To meet the international institutions'recommendations on water management and improve our knowledge of groundwater ressources, a study of regional climatic variability and of its impact on groundwater recharge has been undertaken. This study conducted using data from two stream flow gauges and two rainfall measurement points in western Ivory Coast confirmed the existence of a dry period showed by the evolution of annual and monthly rainfall. The impact of this drought on water resources is assessed by computing the recession coefficient with the dichotomy method implemented by our lab and by quantifying the total potential groundwater discharge.
The study shows that rainfall reduction began in 1966 (statistical break year) and that the yearly high intensity rainfall period is reduced to two months against four months initially. This reduction impacts the groundwater levels and the total potential groundwater discharge. Some sensitive watersheds like Cavally react immediately to the shortage while less sensitive ones like Drou present a delayed response. |
