Cloudiness-precipitation and geographical factors in Atlantic Equatorial Africa during June-August and December-February seasons

Summary : Seasonal data on cold top-cloud frequencies (1986-1996) and rainfall (1951-1993) were used to analyse correlations between cloudiness, precipitation and geographical factors in Atlantic Equatorial Africa (Gabon, Congo and southern Cameroon regions). Linear regressions and correspondence factor analysis (CFA) were used in this study. During the June-August season, the rainfall distribution in northern equatorial regions (at elevations of 600 m or higher) was closely correlated with latitude. During the December-February season, lowland regions (south of the Equator) had more rainfall than high plateaus in the study regions. Correlations between vegetation cover and precipitation during these two seasons were not clear. It was found that the atmospheric dynamics prevailed over the surface dynamics.
