Effect of rainfall rate on soil calcium and exchangeable sodium distributions in northern Algeria

Summary : Analysis of a soil database revealed a clear three-dimensional distribution of two pedological features (% CaCO3, % exchangeable sodium) relative to rainfall rates. The results showed a significant relation between these parameters and rainfall rates. This study demonstrated that in arid zones (rainfall < 300 mm) the soils were more calcareous and alkaline, with relatively homogeneous distributions in the profiles. In humid zones, the soils were less calcareous and alkaline, with lower profile distributions of CaCO3 and exchangeable sodium. Rainfall is thus a key factor determining soil distributions of these elements in northern Algeria.
