Summary : Tunisia has clearly, until now, adopted substantial measures for population control, sustainable water resource management without rationing, and economic and industrial choices to promote food security. Despite these efforts, the increasing water resource and food needs of the population is a constant concern for planners in the Tunisian context, where:
- Population growth is relatively controlled, but has increased fourfold since 1921, to reach the current density of 55 inhab./km2.
- There have been substantial efforts to mobilize water resources and develop irrigation since independence, but per-capita water needs have now been fulfilled, but supplies are being depleted.
- Cereal production is sharply increasing, mainly through the development of irrigation, but there is still potential for further development. Food security is relatively uncertain.
This study was undertaken to enhance forecasting with respect to economic management of water resources, cereal production intensification (staple foods) to meet water and cereal needs of the growing population in 2010, 2020, and 2030... |
