Summary : This paper focuses on the usefulness of digital maps for the analysis of vegetation fragmentation and renewable resource characterization. The study deals with the situation in Burkina Faso, a dry tropical country that is seriously affected by drought and soil erosion. Land-use patterns and woody plant resources, which are important Sudano-Sahelian landscape components, were investigated. Their distributions followed the phytogeographical zonation features. In the south, woody plant resources are still important, but are disappearing in the vicinity of the main towns and on the central Mosse plateau. Previously unpublished maps are presented, thus illustrating the advantage of GIS software programs for providing new georeferenced information. |
