Summary : Olive growing in mediterranean countries is based on a thousand-years-old tradition, an ancestral know-how and a recent technical evolution. The experimental approach is relied on international organisation (COI, FAO) and European (EU). The main agronomical aspects to take into account for the olive orchard management (plantation and growing) are the plant material, a good mastery of abiotic factors (climatic conditions, soil type, water irrigation, fertilisation,..) and biotic factors (training system and pollination, pests and disease control). The preponderant position of the plant material in the technical evolution is due to the renewal of the orchards with new cultivars or clones, and the methods of propagation. The pomological and phytosanitary qualities are evolving and the fruit products are diversified and specific leading to AOC or labelled strategies. |
