Summary : Few empirical studies have been conducted on the state of science in Africa. Based on the results of a study sponsored by the European Commission, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), this paper attempts to provide a realistic picture of the science profession in Africa today. Scientific and technical (S&T) activities went through a process of institutionalisation and professionalisation in Africa during the last thirty years. But these efforts have not been sufficient to create a sustainable dynamic process of scientific production and of reproduction of the national scientific communities. The situation is today critical in a number of countries and particularly in Median Africa (Sub-Saharan Africa excluding South Africa) where S&T systems and the working environment of scientists are deteriorating. The results of the empirical studies presented in this article not only provide a vivid picture of the conditions of the science profession on the African continent, but also contribute to diagnosing the situation in terms of political urgency. |
