Summary : From the examination of recent codes of practice in various countries and of guidelines from international organizations (Codex Alimentarius, Council of Europe), it seems that a consensus is currently emerging concerning scientific criteria for health claim substantiation. Even if the persisting problems dealing with the use of claims in the labeling of foodstuffs could be solved at the international level, we would still be in a marketing area insofar as some issues related to public health have not yet been addressed. Specifically, two questions may be formulated: does the use of health claims induce new risks via modifications of dietary patterns? Does the use of health claims result in the expected health benefits in the current (and not experimental) conditions in a long term use? New methodologies should be implemented to obtain answers. Finally, some progress about the protection of innovation in the field could be a valuable help in the management of claims and the evolution of researches. |
