Summary : The study of the culture of the date palm in the Kidal region of Northern Mali falls within the framework of agricultural development after successive years of drought in these regions. The situation has forced people to leave farming and move to market gardening and, potentially, to the culture of the date palm. One must, however, ask if there is a culture of date palm in Kidal. Date palm culture appears to be in a primitive state, with very poor cropping, extremely high density per hectare and totally disorganized occupation of space in the palm garden. This culture is generally conducted as a pure system. The yield per tree and year is very low, estimated at 10 - 15 kg. Many varieties are from the Maghreb, especially from Algeria. The development of the culture of the date palm in Kidal could be a means of maintaining people in the territories and helping them survive in regions where breeding has become too difficult. |
