Diversity and dynamics of mixed crop-livestock agricultural households in Southern Mali

Cahiers Agricultures. Volume 19, Number 3, 185-93, mai-juin 2010, Étude originale

Résumé   Article gratuit

Summary : To identify possible interventions to improve long-term productivity of crop-livestock systems, quantification of available resources and their allocation according to different household categories is necessary. The objectives of this study were to increase understanding of farm diversity, describe household dynamics and assess their development. The 32-farm ESPGRN Sikasso database, followed from 1994 to 2004, was analyzed using multivariate methods (Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis) to generate 4 household classes. The first class consists of 13% of the farms. The second class represents the majority of the farms (69%). The third and fourth classes consist of 9% each. The number of Tropical Livestock Units (TLU) differed significantly among classes (P <\; 0.001). Between 1994 and 2004, the number of TLU increased from 35 to 57 (class 1) and from 0.9 to 1.1 (class 4). Family labor changed from 14 to 21 (class 1) and from 2 to 3 (class 4). The proportion of cotton in cropped areas changed from 39 to 41% (class 1) and from 7 to 0% (class 4). The index of change for households (ICH) in the Koutiala area averaged per class indicates a trend of intensification and development of large farms, while the small farms tend to disappear.

Keywords : animal productions, economy and rural development, tools and methods, vegetal productions
