Summary : A sorghum breeding program, based on the use of local varieties, the participatory approach and the adaptation to environmental constraints was implemented. The main objective was to rely on local genetic resources to simultaneously improve productivity and preserve genetic diversity. The broadening of the genetic base with local varieties allowed us increase the participation of local varieties’ genes to approximately 70% of the basic population. Photoperiod sensitivity conferred a phenological flexibility to the obtained varieties. The material remained successful independently of sowing date. The natural tillering of the local varieties was conserved, which makes it possible to obtain close to 4t/ha even with low planting densities. Our results show that we are still far from having exhausted the genetic variability of our basic population. Two means of improvement are outlined for the short and middle term: the introduction of stability traits characteristic of local varieties into the improved material and the introduction of productivity traits into the local material.

Keywords : natural resources and environment, vegetal productions
