Summary : Embryo cloning by transfer of nuclei into the cytoplasm of enucleated oocytes opens a new field of application in embryo-transfer biotechnology. In the cattle-rearing industry, for example, several series of five to ten identical calves (clones) have already been produced. However, less than 10% of the reconstituted embryos have been able to develop to term after transplant into the surrogate mother. More progress is imperative if we want this technology to generate applications. Examples of these include the spreading of genotypes selected for weakly-heritable characteristics and the creation of new genetic progresses. This progress requires greater understanding of the fundamental, and interrelated, key stages occurring at the onset of embryonic development: the effect of oocyte cytoplasm on nuclear organisation, and the programming of gene activity already turned on in the donor nucleus prior to transfer. |
