Smallholder experiments: trial methods and technical results on planting density and nitrogen fertilizer use for irrigated rice in northern Vietnam.

Cahiers Agricultures. Volume 6, Number 5, 101-10, Septembre-Octobre 1997, Agricultures des deltas

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Eric Le Quéré, Bach Trung Hung, Jean-Marc Barbier

Summary : This article presents examples of trials on irrigated rice production carried out on smallholdings in the Nam Thanh district, an intensive farming region in the Red River delta. In 1992, techniques tested in a comparative double trial on replanting density were rapidly diffused. Farmers and researchers were also quick to give their impressions and state their expectations of this new approach. The trial highlighted the interactions involved in crop management and the difficulties that farmers have in developing an efficient fertilizer strategy. In 1994, a classic and detailed trial carried out on smallholdings demonstrated small yield differences between several methods of dividing spring and summer applications of urea. It led to new hypotheses on the interactions between organic and mineral fertilizer use and on the efficiency of fertilizer applications on smallholdings. In 1995, a new experimental approach, based on the two previous trials, was set up to look at the interactions and the relative efficacy of organic and mineral fertilizers. Adapted to the relatively homogenous, small-scale smallholder plots, this approach made it possible to test a greater number of treatments. However, variability between plots made it difficult to accurately assess similar treatments. The project achieved its objectives (training, establishing technical recommendations, and diffusing new information) during the 3 consecutive years of on-farm trials.
