Résumé   Summary

Author(s) : Pascal Bergeret, Victor Djoukeng, Projet Bafou, Département d’économie rurale, Centre universitaire de Dschang, Cameroun, 8, rue des Charmilles, 78460 Chevreuse, France..

Summary : Agriculture is a major sector of the Cameroon economy. The serious crisis now affecting the country does not spare the agriculture. The Bamileke area in western Cameroon in famous for its very intensive agriculture of both food and export crops. However, recent disturbances to the macroeconomic environment have brought about drastic changes in farmers’ behaviour and strategies. As a result, agricultural developmental projects lack reliable and up-to-date references about local farming systems as a basis for sound technical intervention. This paper discusses a methodology aimed at taking both farmers’stratégies and development workers’objectives into account when elaborating economic and technical references for agriculture. Bafou, a shiefdom in the Bamileke area is taken as an example. The method is based on the concept of a cropping system particularly suited to Bamileke agriculture. The results are given quantitatively in terms of land, labour and capital return for each type of cropping system in the zone. These figures represent the productivity thresholds technical innovations must attain in order to have a chance of being adopted by the farmers. The paper further discusses some advantages and shortoomings of the method.
