Summary : With fast-changing eating-habits, international competition and increasingly stringent standards, improving production quality is a constant concern for the food industry. Machine vision - the computerised analysis of video images - can help solve some of the problems. The industry itself, its equipment manufacturers and researchers are working to ensure the technique is successfully integrated. Since the sensor does not touch the foodstuff, it does not contaminate, and it can be used for a wide range of visual inspections: packaging, where it is almost a run-of-the-mill process already, high-speed small-vegetable sorting, and in sectors as varied as biscuits, TV dinners or fish portioning. Among the questions addressed in the present paper are the context, the feasibility, the main users and certain sectorial applications. |
