Water balance in the Pool region (Republic of the Congo)

Cahiers Agricultures. Volume 9, Number 1, 47-53, Janvier - Février 2000, Méthodes et techniques

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Gaston Samba, M’baye Diop

Summary : A water balance analysis (1951-1990) revealed that water deficit is a real problem in the Congolese equatorial area. On average, the potential water balance was found to be negative during the dry season in the whole Pool region (southern Congo), while positive values were noted during the first rainy season. In 8 years out of 10, positive values were recorded at Brazzaville and M’pouya stations, whereas the water balance was negative in all other regions. The water deficit patterns in September differed in subarid northern areas and arid southern areas. Our results highlighted the spatial and temporal distribution of the water potential, which be useful for should enhancing management of lowlands and the cropping calendar.
