Bacterial diseases of cereals in Morocco

Cahiers Agricultures. Volume 6, Number 6, 605, Décembre 1997, Note de recherche

Résumé

Author(s) : Abdelhadi Benjama

Summary : Surveys on bacteria of cereals in Morocco, carried out as part of a UNDP-FAO project, revealed that the main common bacterial diseases were present. Bacteria were isolated and identified in the laboratory, while symptoms were described, illustrated and characterized. Xan thom onas translucens causing bacterial black chaff on ears and bacterial black stripe on leaves, Pseudomonas atrofaciens and Pseudomonas coronafaciens causing bacterial glume rot on ears and bacterial leaf blight on leaves, Pseudomonas syringae (common to Graminaceae) and bacterial spick blight due to Clavibacter tritici, were identified. Bacterial diseases of cereals were found to be more common in northern Morocco (which is more humid) than in the center. Only wheat fields planted with common nonselected seeds were affected by such diseases.
