Summary : When prescribing a drug, doctors should rely on facts as much as possible. They can rely on clinical trials, provided they are of good methodological quality to guarantee internal validity. Internal validity requires mainly random assignment of the subjects, and the use of a control group. To improve clinical practice, clinical trials should not only have internal validity, but also be clinically relevant. This means that the expected benefits of treatments should be clinically meaningful and applicable in everyday medical practice. This report addresses the essential points for critical reading of clinical trials.

Keywords : randomization, control groups, double-blind method, validity, bias
