Management of Chronic Hepatitis C: a psychiatric emergency?

Summary : The psychiatric disorders associated with hepatitis C and its treatment occur frequently and is probably one of the causes of non-administration, poor monitoring or interruption of anti-HCV treatment. Chronic infection via HCV affects less than 1% of the general population but its prevalence in the psychiatric population is more significant. In this context, it seems necessary to make psychiatric teams aware of this problematic situation in patients treated for Hepatitis C and revise the situation of psychiatric management currently proposed by somatic specialists, as well as psychiatrists/psychologists who are involved in the care of HCV patients and to clarify the complex nature of a subsequent HCV disorder. This procedure should also include the specific type of treatment based on the therapeutic recommendations made by the Afssaps en May 2008.
