Tumor banks for clinical use: definition, prospects and recommendations

Summary : Tumor banks for clinical use are composed of tumor samples which should be collected owing to the diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic value of performing molecular analyses on frozen tissues. Every tumor meeting these criteria should be frozen both in public and private practice. At present, tumor samples from malignant blood diseases, lymphomas, sarcomas, brain tumors, pediatric tumors, some gastro-intestinal tumors and some lung carcinomas should be frozen. The INCa recommendations for tumor banks are in agreement with those of the ANAES with regard to frozen storage of tumor samples for the purpose of molecular analysis. Tumor banks should be situated close to molecular analysis laboratories so that tests can be performed quickly and reliably. Such frozen samples could also be used for research provided patients have given their informed consent.
