A book written in French.
The incidence of breast cancer has increased greatly over the past 20 years, with over 40,000 new cases diagnosed and 11,000 deaths per year.
This book describes new therapies used to treat breast cancer, a rapidly evolving field that is difficult to update owing to continuously changing attitudes and treatment modalities: for example, in surgery, the widespread use of the sentinel lymph node method for small tumours, in radiotherapy, indications have changed, methods have improved and partial breast radiation methods are currently being studied.
New, target-specific therapies are more and more common, i.e. anti-HER2 monoclonal antibodies, anti-tyrosine kinase agents, anti-angiogenic agents, etc.
The use of taxanes in chemotherapy has become widespread. Aromatase inhibitors represent a significant step forward.
Many questions have yet to be answered, not only as regards these new molecules, but also concerning their combination with chemotherapy and their respective indications depending on the biological profile of a given tumour.
This book describes the challenge faced in the next decade: moving from "off the peg" treatments to "tailor-made" therapies.
