When Alzheimer's disease is first diagnosed, your life and that of the patient in your care will not change much: you may only have to help your loved one from time to time during the day. Outside help becomes valuable when the more severe consequences of the disease begin to become apparent. It is the weariness of the caregiver, who co-ordinates management of the patient, which almost always leads to the patient being admitted to an institution. Keeping the patient in the home is only possible when a support network helping with the dependency of the patient on his or her caregiver and providing the latter with some relief has been created. While the assistance required to create such a network exists, it may not cover all needs or be entirely suited to your particular situation. Varying in nature (benefits or home help) they are allocated on the basis of extremely precise criteria of which the caregiver must be aware. In addition, legislation is changing (new laws and application decrees). Finally, there is no "single office" centralising the different types of assistance available which are in fact the province of a wide variety of administrative bodies. Creating a home support network is therefore akin to assembling the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and completing an administrative obstacle course….
