With about 3,400 new cases every year, human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are regarded as sexually transmitted diseases.
A distinction is drawn between "low-risk" HPVs, so called because they are not linked with an increased risk of cancer, and "high-risk" HPVs which may result in pre-cancerous lesions – 10% to 20% of which may lead to cancer of the cervix.
This is a real public health problem, in terms of both the number of often very young women affected and the medical costs incurred.
At present, the only strategies adopted to cope with the problem are screening and early treatment of infections, which have proved moderately effective.
Through this book, a group of authors have laid the foundations of a debate which tends to show that only vaccination against HPVs will be the most appropriate solution in the near future.
