Asthma is the most common chronic illness. It affects people of all ages and all population categories in industrialised countries.
In the past 20 years, much progress has been made in perfecting new forms of treatment and organising health care, particularly in educating asthma patients.
Understanding asthma is not easy for patients: knowing the difference between acute and chronic asthma, treatment for attacks and long-term treatment, and detecting symptoms. They need to know about all these major themes in order to beat the disorder, or at least live with it, and to achieve optimum quality of life.
Asthma is a chronic condition that can last a lifetime, especially in the most worrying form generally known as "severe persistent asthma". That is the form which is the subject of this book.
It sets out to identify patients suffering from severe asthma, control the way asthma develops, find the best treatment for all sufferers and help to give them an acceptable quality of family, school and working life.
